Digital Age and Democracy

Obama is concerned that information overload is distracting from intelligent discussion of the issues.

  1. Indeed, the first post-budget report I heard tonight was about Wayne Swan already picking his election slogan based on his comments on economic responsibility. This is a weak link to what is the broader issue here; whether the government has provided an economically sound budget for the year.

The downfall to having all this information out there and all these individual voices being heard is that it's much easier to miss the voices that are making meaningful comments and who are trying to do the right thing. Far too often we hear about the people we shouldn't care about - why do I need to know who Justin Bieber is? Seriously.

  2. Good point, Matt - hence the need for good filters: folksonomies, social bookmarking, RSS, and even network filters. We'll be looking at all of these in Tutorial 9.

  3. Agreed Matt, leave the pointless information for Ellen to report on in her show!
Surely an intelligent person can decipher the relevant information, although having filters like those mentioned by Mark will only help achieve this for those who are struggling with information overload. The really intelligent people are already using the filters!
Personally I'm all for information overload as being subject to lots of information and different viewpoints can only broaden mindsets.
